The Group Today | ||
| BTTG was formed in 1988 by the merger
of the Shirley Institute and Wira Technology Group (formerly the
Wool Industries Research Association), organisations that were founded
shortly after the first world war. Over the past 80 years through
their roles as research associations for the UK textile industry
they have made major contributions to the development of modern textiles
and performance materials . They had key involvement in the development
of a wide range of testing methods and techniques, including such
as the tog test and the Martindale test. In additional they can claim
credit for a number of major scientific advances including :
• The invention of the first ‘breathable’ water proof materials • Nobel prize for Chemistry in 1952 for the invention of partition chromatography Over recent years the Group has adapted to the decline of UK based
textile manufacturing by refocusing its activities toward the testing
and certification of textiles and no longer carries out research. |
