Overview

The Federation Internationale De L’Automobile (FIA) specify stringent design and test requirements for protective clothing worn by drivers and mechanics in automobile competitions. The garments should conform to FIA 8856-2018 (modified 06-07-2022) for drivers or FIA 8867-2016 (modified 14-03-2017) for mechanics. The requirements apply to the following (helmets are not covered by this standard):

  1. Outer garments (racing drivers suits & mechanics suits)
  2. Undergarments
  3. Socks
  4. Shoes
  5. Balaclava hoods
  6. Rain proof overgarments
  7. Gloves

The requirements are designed to ensure that the driver and mechanic are protected from heat and flame.
