Upholstered Furniture - Contract

Overview

BS 7176 specifies requirements for the resistance to ignition of non-domestic upholstered composite furniture seating when tested in accordance with BS 5852, BS EN 1021-1 or BS EN 1021-2, as appropriate.

Although at present there is no legislation directly controlling the ignitability of contract and office furniture, there are statutory and other requirements in use.

In addition to testing composite furniture, BS 7176 also specifies methods of test for filling materials used in upholstered furniture.

Composite Furniture – Hazard Levels and Tests

Dependant on the end use location of the upholstered furniture, the composite furniture should comply with one of the following hazard levels. 

Low hazard

BS EN 1021-1

BS EN 1021-2

Medium hazard

BS EN 1021-1.

BS EN 1021-2.

BS 5852, Clause 11 (Ignition source 5)

High hazard

BS EN 1021-1.

BS EN 1021-2.

BS 5852, Clause 11 (Ignition source 7)

Very high hazard

BS EN 1021-1.

BS EN 1021-2.

BS 5852, Clause 11 (upholstery composites) or Clause 12 (complete item of furniture).

Additional requirements at the discretion of the specifier with high hazard requirements as a minimum
